Aiding the Recovery of ME

With Hypnotherapy & The Dream Technique

Currently it is estimated that some 250,000 people in Britain are affected by this illness.

It should be explained  however, that there are a number of different names for what is an illness of uncertain cause:

Myalgic Encephalopathy or "ME" (also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis)

*Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or "CFS"

*Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome or "PVFS"

*Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome or "CFIDS"

All types of people at all ages are affected. Severe and debilitating fatigue, painful muscles and joints, disordered sleep, gastric disturbances, poor memory and concentration are commonplace. In many cases, onset is linked to a viral infection. Other triggers may include an operation or an accident, although some people experience a slow, insidious onset

The illness has an individual element - your particular version is probably not the same as anyone else's in all its respects. Both mainstream and complementary medicine have produced  benefits in recovery

With all illnes no matter if it is a simple cold or cancer, our attitude towards our illness and in our own ability to recover plays a large part in getting well and in aiding a full recovery. It seems also that our negative thoughts also play a major part in if we fight off our illness or accept it. Our thoughts have an affect on the way we feel and the way we feel increases the producion of cortisol (stress hormone) in our body or serotonin (happy hormone). As the body produces more cortisol the toxin levels rise which in turn increases blood pressure and blood sugar and reduces immune responses.

Higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream (like those associated with chronic stress) have been shown to have negative effects, such as:

*Impaired cognitive performance

*Suppressed thyroid function

*Blood sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia

*Decreased bone density

*Decrease in muscle tissue

*Higher blood pressure

Lowered immunity and inflammatory responses in the body, slowed wound healing, and other health consequences

Increased abdominal fat, which is associated with a greater amount of health problems than fat deposited in other areas of the body. Some of the health problems associated with increased stomach fat are heart attacks, strokes, the development of , higher levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL), which can lead to other health problems!

To keep cortisol levels healthy and under control, the body’s relaxation  response should be activated after the fight or flight response occurs. You can learn to relax your body with various stress management techniques, and you can make lifestyle changes in order to keep your body from reacting to stress in the first place. The following have been found by many to be very helpful in relaxing the body and mind, aiding the body in maintaining healthy cortisol levels:

The 'Medical model of ME/PVFS/CFS'

 The Physiological Catch 22':

Many sufferers find themselves stuck in the following downward spiral:

1. You fall ill due to an initial 'bug' or some stress, or external factor that started your M.E. This event caused an extreme stress on your immune system.

2. You felt very unwell. The symptoms were either very strong or lasted so long that you began to wonder if you'd ever get better. You consulted your doctor and specialists in a number of fields, but nobody seemed to have any answers, or provided much useful help, and the illness continued.

3. These concerns, understandably, made you even more stressed than you were when you got ill, which in turn made your body produce adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) and cortisol are a good and normal response to short term stress, but long term production of them exhausts us, it affects our blood sugar and thyroid levels, it suppresses (and messes up the proper regulation of) our immune system and makes us prone to illness and tiredness.....this unfortunately makes you loop back to step 2.

Please note: The physiology of this cycle is well documented by other authorities (Selye et al).

The above descriptionis  brief and simple, but it is of course only a partial glimpse of the complex interactions of the mind, body and hormonal systems, and should not be taken as the entirety of our understanding of the physiological mechanisms involved.

More complex events can result from long term stimulation of this cycle, such as adrenal exhaustion and low cortisol levels which in turn create different physiological responses and immune system regulation issues.

So How Does The Dream Technique Work?

By Changing Limiting Beliefs with 'The Dream Technique ' which is a six session training programme will help you to recognise limiting or damaging belief - systems, and change them for good. (Some simpler problems may require less than six sessions)

A 'limiting belief system', is a set of personal beliefs that can have an incredibly negative or damaging effect on your life - causing you to suffer (for example): relationship problems, ill-health, phobias fears and anxieties, and even mental and physical illnesses.

This training program has already helped people with problems such as clinical depression, M.E., post-viral fatigue syndrome, obsessions, phobias and thousands of people who needed help to stop smoking.

People who undergo this training program are referred to as either 'trainees', or ‘students', but NOT 'clients' - because this is a training programme and not therapy.

Changing limiting beliefs and making significant improvements in your life requires determined effort, and you need to take full responsibility in order for these changes to take place. You may need to question ideas and beliefs that you have held for a very long time - and some people can find this very challenging.
