REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is an ancient healing art which stimulates the body’s own self-healing system, relaxes tension and reduces stress.  Reflexology is a natural, safe and very effective therapy, it enables the body to reach a deep state of relaxation which in turn allows the body to heal itself, returning it to its normal balanced state.

Reflexology works on the principle that the foot is a complete map of the body and that every organ, muscle, gland etc. in the body is connected by a network of nerves to reflex points on the feet. The pathways between reflex points on the feet and the organs of the body are known as energy pathways. Sometimes these pathways become blocked resulting in disease. To help restore the body back to health a Reflexologist  uses pressure on the reflex points of the feet to help clear any blockages of energy.

Reflexology is an important part of this programme as it helps to alleviate the effects of stress and help flush out toxins. Also by including deep relaxation therapy, it allows the nervous system to function normally and free the body to seek its own balanced state.

 Aromatherapy

What is aromatherapy?

Smell is a very powerful sense that can work with your memory. Certain smells remind you of events, people and places. In addition to this, the smell also activates your emotional memory.

Aromatherapy uses warm essential oils to activate your sense of smell and increase your sense of well-being. The oils can be used within the therapy session and massaged into your Your therapist may also give you the remainder of the oils used to dropped into your bath water or  to blend with other oils or steam for you to inhale at home between sessions.

The essential oils used in aromatherapy are powerful and are extracted from plants, shrubs, flowers, bark, peel, resin, grasses, fruits, roots, trees, petals, stems or seeds. Only a small amount of essential oil is needed, and is blended with a larger amount of  "carrier" oil - such as grapeseed oil - and used on the skin.

The most frequently used essential oils include camomile, lavender, rosemary and tea-tree.

What is aromatherapy good for?

Aromatherapy works on the basis that the smell of the essential oils trigger the limbic system - the part of the brain that seems to be linked with emotion. This is why it can affect how you feel, and help you relax. Massage helps your skin to absorb warmed essential oils; these oils improve the effectiveness of the massage in treating specific physical problems.

Aromatherapy is used in a number of ways, including:

* relieving stress and anxiety; it is used with older people with dementia to relieve distress
* helping you to sleep better; whether you have problems getting to sleep (insomnia) or staying asleep
* helping you relax
* relieving tiredness or aching muscles
* improving flexibility

* soothing chronic pain
* improving skin tone
* aiding concentration
* calming emotions.

Deep tissue massage

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that works on the deeper layers of muscle tissue.

S imilar to Swedish massage, deep tissue massage uses slower and firmer strokes and pressure than other treatments - deep finger pressure that concentrates on particular areas, and follows or goes across the fibres of muscles and tendons.

Deep tissue massage is a blanket term that describes a number of different therapies, and is often used medically by physiotherapists, chiropractors and so on.

Deep tissue massage features in most forms of massage to some degree, including:

* Swedish massage
* Thai massage
* Sports/muscular massage
* Lymphatic drainage

Wha is Deep Tisue Massage good for?

Deep tissue massage is a particularly effective to alleviate tension stress and muscular pain, it helps to refresh and relax muscles, increasing the blood flow and therefore the oxygen flow around your body. This gets rid of toxins in very sore and strained muscles, which helps them to strengthen and heal.

Deep tissue massage is often used to treat people who are recovering from accidents, and for sports injuries as it increases blood circulation in muscles that are underused, relieves chronic muscle tension throughout the body, and can also break down scar tissue and "knots" deep in the muscles.

Lymphatic drainage

What is lymphatic drainage?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a therapeutic massage treatment that uses very light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase lymphatic flow and get rid of toxins in your body.

So what is lymph?

Lymph is a clear, slightly yellow fluid that flows around your body, carrying white blood cells and antibodies to your tissues and organs. These are essential to your immune system and help you fight infection.

We dump toxins into our bodies  not just by smoking and fatty foods: we eat badly, we live in dirty cities full of pollution, we drink too much alcohol, eat too much sugar and our lifestyles are unforgiving and unhealthy. Your lymphatic system's job is to flush all the toxins away, and keep you healthy.

Lymphatic drainage massage boosts the flow of lymph around your body, refreshing your immune system and flushing out toxins.

What is Lymphatic Drainage good for?

Because lymph is so key to keeping your immune system working properly, improving its flow and drainage around the body is good for you in lots of ways. Lymphatic drainage massage can have a powerful effect on your general health:

* It can help your body fight infection and speed up healing and recovery from illness
* It is a popular and effective treatment for cellulite
* It reduces water retention
* It can boost weight loss
* Manual lymphatic drainage is used in the treatment of lymphoedema

* It can improve your skin texture by:
* reducing swelling, puffiness and blotches
* giving you clean healthy pores
* speeding up healing in scar tissue, so it can, for example, improve the appearance of stretch marks

It's also a good idea to give yourself plenty of time either side of any massage, so that you don't feel rushed.

Precautions

You should always tell your therapist in advance if you:

* are, or think you might be, pregnant
* have any medical conditions or are receiving any treatment or medication
* have recently had an injury or operation
* are allergic to anything, particularly skin allergies
* have any broken skin or sores on your scalp
as this may affect the kind of treatment you receive.

Before any massage treatment, avoid large meals or alcohol. It's also a good idea to drink plenty of water, which will help your body to flush out toxins.
