Hypnosis for birthing is nothing new actually, it has been used in childbirth for many years.  In the early 1950’s the American Medical Association recognized hypnosis as a valuable tool for health professionals.

More and more women, and their healthcare providers, are discovering the tremendous benefits of using hypnosis in birth!  This increased popularity exploded in 1999 when Dateline featured a very positive segment on hypnosis for birth.  Hypnosis in birth has continued to generate positive media attention.  Even more exciting -now scientific research is validating the use of hypnosis with numerous research results!

The Key to comfortable Birthing is the creation and control of' the body's own natural anaesthesia produced by a calm relaxed hypnotic state in this state your breathing is even and rhythmical, ensuring a high level of oxygen is entering your body.  This oxygen goes through to your baby, ensuring that your baby remains calm and stable. Increased oxygen stimulates the production of Oxytocin (hormone responsible for contraction) and endorphins. Your blood pressure remains at a healthy level, and as your body is limp and relaxed you conserve your energy, with all excess energy being channelled through to the muscle that is really working hard, namely your Uterus. As the Uterus has no resistance or tension from surrounding muscles, the contractions are more effective and more comfortable. As the labour progresses un hindered by artificial hormones, other natural hormones kick in including relaxin which allows the cells of the birth canal to relax, soften and stretch, so making the babies descent easier and more comfortable.

Kathleen Freeman first developed the powerful ‘Comfortable Birthing programme’ in 1996 which incorporate suggestion Therapy , Self Hypnosis, visualisation techniques, the ‘Calm Technique’, mind power solutions and Specially mastered

Fear is the trigger to pain, this fear activates the nervous system to produce adrenalin (danger hormone), which gives you the power to prepare to fight or to run away or freeze. Your cervix tightens and the increased level of adrenalin neutralises the Oxytocin (the hormone responsible for stimulating your uterus to con tract) and endorphins (pain killing hormone), so that the body naturally slows down or even stops the birthing.

Experiencing fear during labour leads to your heat rate increasing, your breathing becoming shallow and faster (so reducing the amount of Oxygen in your body and your baby), your heart pumping blood faster around your body so raising your blood pressure and blood being directed away from your Uterus (and your baby) to your limbs, essentially to prepare you for action.

Why use hypnosis for Pregnancy & Childbirth?

Often a shorter labour, especially in the first stage (first time mothers tend to take only half as long).

Fewer births require surgical intervention.
Mothers are less exhausted so have more control and recover faster.
There is less need for medication, and often none at all. As you may be aware, any type of medication can carry a risk to both mother and baby.
Mums are able to control their discomfort levels by the use of self-hypnosis so that the birth ultimately is as relaxed and possible.
Babies have shown to cry less, sleep and feed better and generally calmer, possibly due to a diminished trauma at birth.

Utilizing Hypnosis You Can Learn to:

Reduce Pain
Increase Calmness & Confidence
Reduce Fears & Anxiety
Reduce/Eliminate the Need for Medication in Labour Reduce the Need for Interventions (C-Section, Forceps, etc.)
Learn to Quickly & Deeply Relax
Increase Control in Labour

An article from Medscape

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 13 - Self-hypnosis during childbirth may ease some of the pain of labor, lower the risk of medical complications and reduce the need for surgery, study results suggest.

Hypnotherapy has been shown to reduce pain and the need for anesthesia, as well as ease anxiety and fear during childbirth, Dr. Paul G. Schauble and colleagues note in the Journal of Family Practice for May. The use of hypnosis during pregnancy to prepare women for delivery may be key since it gives them a sense of control, they say.

To investigate, the researchers, who are at the University of Florida in Gainesville, assigned 42 pregnant teenagers to receive either counseling or four sessions of instruction in self-hypnosis for childbirth. Teens in the hypnosis group learned deep relaxation and imagery techniques to help them cope with pain. They also received suggestions to help them respond to possible complications and boost their confidence in their ability to manage anxiety.

According to the report, only 1 of 22 patients in the hypnosis group remained in the hospital longer than 2 days after delivery, compared with 8 of 20 patients who did not learn self-hypnosis. None of the patients in the hypnosis group needed surgical intervention, compared with 60% of those in the non-hypnosis group.

In addition, fewer patients in the hypnosis group experienced complications such as high blood pressure or vacuum-assisted delivery, opted for medical anesthesia or oxytocin, or required medication after delivery.

"This study provides empirical data demonstrating that the use of hypnosis in preparing pregnant women for labor and delivery reduces the risk of complications, decreases the need for medical intervention...and promotes safer, more comfortable delivery for mother and child," Dr. Schauble told Reuters Health. "We anticipate this will lead to a reduction in the costs involved in childbirth."
J Fam Pract 2001;50:441-443.

The statistics and ongoing research are showing that women using hypnosis skills in labour experience more positive birth experiences, with less pain, require less medications, need fewer interventions (such as forceps, C-sections, etc), and have shorter labour times.  All good news when you are pregnant and getting closer to giving birth!

Why Hypnosis Helps

It seems increasingly evident that our most useful skill, is the ability to relax deeply and completely.
Hypnosis in this instants seems the natural remedy to remove anxiety and to help you truly relax the biggest deeply and completely.  Hypnosis is also extremely effective in increasing coping skills and diminishing your perception of pain.  Your increased ability to relax deeply creates an opportunity for your body to do what it is designed to do; to give birth naturally in a calm and relaxed way. However with the tools of the ‘Comfortable Birthing Programme’ your experience will be gracefully and go smoothly.  (for some eliminating pain completely!) ,by altering pain perception, the programme will give you the coping skills which creates greater calmness and control through the birth process. Which in turn will help to reduce the stress on your baby while they are being born.

Using the tools you will learn using techniques for instant self hypnosis tools you will have the ability and skills to help you in a way that best supports you in labour.

Many women report that one of their biggest helps in labour was the ability to manage their response to the stresses of labour and birth.

How will a programme be devised for me?
