Sports Hypnotherapists differ from Psychologists in that they work directly with the Subconscious part of the mind the part that controls our behaviours, so change with hypnosis is often rapid and lasting.
In the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the Russian Olympic team took no less than 11 hypnotists to develop mental clarity and help the athletes with visualisation. In addition out of 20 Australian swimmers named in the 1980 Olympic team 12 had been using Les Cunningham’s tapes for two months previously. – ‘Hypnosport’ by Les Cunningham. Previous to this, in a tour of Australia, England cricket captain Mike Brearley consulted a hypnotherapist to improve his game.
In 1996 Steve Collins beat Chris Eubank for the World Boxing Organisations Super-middleweight title. Much of his success being attributed to the focusing of attention created by hypnosis administered by Dr Tony Quinn, himself a former Champion bodybuilder. Collins was programmed to deliver two punches to Eubank’s one. In the fight Eubank threw 300 punches, Collins threw over 600. Nigel Benn, WBC Super Middleweight Champion and Frank Bruno, WBC Heavyweight Champion both used Sports hypnosis for Boxing performance enhancement and more recently Athlete Iwan Thomas and Golfers Ian Woosnam and Tiger Woods also used the power of hypnosis.

David Beckham one of the world’s greatest soccer players is a great example of the power of visualisation.. David was seen in a in a home video as a young boy of around 9 or 10 years old, he David was speaking to the person behind the camera that his dream was to one day become a professional footballer. David was born and brought up in the south of England in the London area however, youve probably guesed already that the football strip he was wearing in this old film was Manchester United, his visualisation had already begun, seeing himself as part of the team. Most young boys his age would have been so pleased if any of the London clubs like Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspurs had signed him – in fact his Dad is a Tottenham supporter supporter. Uninfluenced by his dad, David was already dreaming at this very early age of just one thing….becoming a great player for Manchester United. You too can learn from David’s example and so many other people who have used the power of visualisation to make their dreams come true.

Using Visualisation For Excellence
Linford Christie proved he was the fastest man in the world when he won the 100-metre Olympic gold in Barcelona. He Said :
“The Olympics is the pinnacle of every athlete’s career. They said I was too old but I did it.
I had practised in my mind and saw myself do it”.
Prior to the race Linford was seen to be so intense and focused on what he was about to do that he was oblivious to what was happening around him. Absolutely nothing was going to distract him, in Linford’s mind he had seen himself win the race before he started it. He had practised it in his mind a thousand times… his determination was steadfast and unmoveable.
One UK football team found themselves at the bottom of their league, so someone suggested printing a fake league table dated in the future with .them at the top. It was placed where all the players could see it every day. Their results changed completely and they started to dramatically rise all the way up the league table for real Thinking back to David Beckham again who is world famous for scoring spectacular goals from free kicks. He always believed he would become an expert free kick taker and that’s why he always stayed behind after training to practice more and more on his own. Some people might say that his skills must be natural, that he was born with talent. Part of that is undoubtedly true but one thing about winners is that they always go that extra step further….practice just that little bit longer an harder than the average person….they believe that they will be great and they prove it.
Recently David Beckham took part in an experiment for television along with leading professors looking at the power of visualisation. They measured David’s brain patterns whilst he was taking free kicks then they sat him down in a comfortable chair and asked him to imagine taking free kicks in his mind. The amazing thing was that the brain patterns were nearly the same. By using powerful visualisation, David could practice his free kicks just with his mind. The best part being that he could practice scoring every time which helped his mind believe that he could and would.

How can the Power of Hypnosis and Visualisation Help?
Hypnotherapy can help with a wide range of common psychological problems experienced by sportspeople of all ages and levels, and in both individual and team sports:
One of Hypnosis's main benefits over some other forms of Psychology is it's ability in accessing unconscious behaviours rapidly. It's often easy for an athlete to be aware of their 'problem' but solving it is another matter when they retain unconscious motivations to keep it alive
